Back in the sterilized streets, signs placed by Israeli settlers in Hebrew and English read,
“These buildings were constructed on land purchased by the Hebron Jewish community in 1807. This land was stolen by Arabs following the muder of 67 Hebron Jews in 1929. We demand justice! Return our property to us!
-The Jewish Community of Hebron”
This refers to the incident that Tumblr user Ron Barak pointed out, in which 67 Jews in the city were killed by Arabs and the remainder of the Jewish population of Hebron were driven out or evacuated by the British. The settler movement here is largely aimed toward returning a strong Jewish presence to the area, which many feel belongs at least in part to them.
On top an IDF military post has been established. A soldier looks out at the city and smokes. Behind this building is part of the Israeli Jewish settlement of Qiryat Arba, which we were unable to visit due to being led by Breaking the Silence, who are not very popular among the Israelis here.
